Making pretty and delicious sugar cookies can sometimes be a tricky business. It can be difficult to get the dough moist enough to be tender, but dry enough to hold their shape while baking. With a little practice most people can master a delicious sugar cookie. How can you get that same treat without sugar? Pretty and delicious no sugar cookies…impossible you say? Actually it can be easier than you think by making some clever substitutions using different types of fruit.

Using fruit to make no sugar cookies may take a bit more time, mainly since you will probably have to puree any fruit that you use. The first thing to do is to taste the fruit you would like to use first and make sure it is sweet enough to bring sweetness to your cookies. Fruit that is out of season or under-ripe may not have enough natural sweetness to replace sugar. Also, it is a good idea to avoid very acidic fruits such as pineapple, since they may counteract some of your other ingredients. Most other fruits should work well. Pears make a nice substitute for vanilla. Other fruits such as berries are better combined with other flavors. Take time and try out different combinations.
